Miami swimwear fashion week 2010
If superbly toned golden brown models strutting their stuff down a catwalk in skimpy bikinis takes your fancy, then Miami Swimwear Fashion Week was the place to be. However, the fake tan, diamontés and hair extensions were blinding, leaving much of the swimwear looking like beach blunders rather than sea side wonders. Below are our top three hits and misses from the collections to show you exactly what we mean…

We always like to save the best for last, so here goes those we could have done without. Ed Hardy is a label renowned for its eclectic mix of urban rock, characterised by fake tattooed skulls and sparkling crystals. Even with that in mind nothing could prepare us for the corset creation he willingly sent down the catwalk. We think the image below speaks for itself! Mara Hoffman is known for her ethnic designs and elegant maxi dresses, but something must have seriously gone awry when she designed this tribal infused spider web get up. Probably the worst of them all (and trust us this was a close call) has to be the Ginger Spice inspired union jack disaster, more suitable for fancy dress attire than public beachwear.

Alas the saviours, some wearable swimwear came out of Florida, which we would happily wear ourselves here in the office. Mr. Hardy redeemed himself in the style stakes with a green diamond embellished bikini, proving that when it comes to decorative embellishments less is truly more. One piece swimsuits may not be for everyone but there’s no mistaking Crystal Jin’s high class sophistication, where overlapping silk is the perfect pool side cover up. Offering a more vintage approach to the onesie was Marysia with a bang on trend nude coloured creation. The black detailing flatters and shrinks the figure creating a rather welcomed step back in time.

Romantic ruffles

Though last autumn was padded with 80s shoulder pads, it’s time to make way for mid-summer’s romantic fancies. Think delicate ruffles, tired skirts, chiffon lace and embrace the loved-up vibe of the season.
During spring fashion week in Milan Dolce and Gabbana featured lace in their collection, adding a gothic spin to the outfits. Reminiscent of Madonna in Like a Prayer, the clothes catered to females wanting to sex up their wardrobes, but still remain bang on trend this summer.
Capturing the true beauty of fashion, Valentino steered clear of any vamp-inspired clothes, focusing ruffles in all their romantic glory. Pastel coloured tiered dresses remained a favourite, staying true to summertime fashion. Feminine and delightful, the dresses have embraced the pretty factor, ensuring that this summer is destined to float away in ruffles.

Perfect plaits
Lattice pastry, lattice clothing…it all sounds good to us! Looking at Zac Posen’s summer offering we can see how much more exciting layering can be with some added cut out detail. With a cute mini dress underneath, oversized jackets or jumpers slashed in part provide the means with which to play peekaboo in your favourite wares. Alexander Wang shows us how to do it in monochrome knitwear, ready to liven up any bold prints you have to flash beneath. Alternatively, Temperley’s lattice sleeved black dress suggests a hint of bare shoulder or back can liven up party outfits perfectly. That’s the thing about this style, it’s cheeky but never too obvious, concealing as much as it reveals.
We’re loving Roland Mouret’s cage/belt hybrid adornment as the perfect addition to bright dresses and waisted skirts. The most obvious way to tap into this trend is through footwear, as the evolution of the gladiator has taken us through to all sorts of cut out shapes and lattice effects. Alternatively, follow in Blake Lively’s footsteps with a trompe l’oeil dress which packs the same punch without any of the exposure.

Summer laid bare

Without a shadow of a doubt, as soon as the first glimmer of sunshine peeps through the cracks in the clouds, the English are guaranteed to strip off down to their bare essentials.
With this in mind Roberto Cavalli has recaptured the essence of underwear as outerwear in his S/S collection, making 2010 a time for women to select their best undies and flash the flesh! Not a trend for the faint hearted, encouraged nudity can only be displayed by those of us with enormous amounts of confidence, (not to mention the rock hard abs to go with it!) but it’s still a rather sumptuous style statement in keep with the sweltering, summer climate.
Opting for design replicas of the 1950s cone bra, Cavalli has reprogrammed the way 21st Century women see their underwear. Think Madonna during her Blonde Ambition tour, think glamour model Betty Page, think Marilyn Monroe and your there! Reminisce the evolution of padded silk bras, because in fashion, what goes around comes around.

Grey days
Well, inky grey to be more specific. In fact, any grey will do. If this colour has been the new black for some time now, it wasn’t going to be long before head-to-toe was the only way forward. First there’s the shades, ranging from slate or metallic right through to almost indigo. Then, there’s the materials: buttery suede, soft silk, cosy jersey- all do their best work in grey. Why is that? Anyway, if it’s good enough for Gucci it’s good enough for us, and we’ll take the matching bag and shoes too. No wonder grey has proved a popular choices for both nails and hair recently (well Kate Moss did it, it must be all right!), celebs and designers alike can’t get enough of it. Usually selective of colour- opting for black, shiny black, and more black- Gareth Pugh wowed crowds with his more commercial and wearable Spring looks, in yep, you guessed it, full on steel shades.
There’s room for this look at both ends of the price range. Perhaps invest in one piece to wear time and time again, such as a leather bomber or suede boots, and have fun on the high street piling on jersey and tank tops to your hearts content. All of this grey feeling, perhaps we really are weather obsessives!

Hot under the collar
It’s official, there’s a new layering tool on the block – collared shirts. Loose shirts layered over vest tops will always be a summer favourite, but the days when white collars buttoned to the top signalled formal wear are long gone now. Starting with Marc Jacobs, designers have shown us how dresses, jumpsuits, even dungarees can be brought into a new season with a simple white shirt. As we pondered the brassiere-over-top phenomena, we missed how far reaching the button-up look would become. Chloe showed delicate separates in khaki, beige and white with suit influences of Bianca Jagger circa 1971. In fact sometimes the gap between Celine and Chloe gets a tad narrow: Phoebe Philo is a big fan of the collared shirt; the former Chloe designer now features this style heavily on her Autumn catwalks for Celine.
Silk and sheer fabrics are the ideal weight for tucking into waisted skirts and trousers, adding to the versatile nature of a modern staple; though printed or striped cottons also refresh tired denim a treat. Miu Miu’s swallow print has proved a stellar success, and French connection have done a beautiful shirt inspired by the pattern- a fun way to vary your options. The best thing about this is how adaptable shirts have become: flares, skinnies, in fact all shapes and styles are lifted by a collar peeking out of the top. For the best option think Kate Bosworth in all-American Calvin Klein ambassadorship: stark, simple, classic.

New generation
The latest winners of the British Fashion Council’s NEWGEN award have been announced, and we’re still discussing the trophy list. NEWGEN has been integral to the industry since 1993: providing funding for collections, exhibitions and installations at London Fashion Week to designers deemed most worthy by the experts. Previous benefactors have included Alexander McQueen, Christopher Kane and Erdem. This time around though, three winners in particular have caught our attention: Peter Pilotto, Michael Van Der Ham and Holly Fulton. They’ve all hit the fashion headlines in recent seasons, and were quick to hit the LynkU front desk too – so needless to say we’re thrilled all three made the cut.
Pilotto, applauded for modern elegant clothing, was deemed 2009’s best emerging talent, and we can see why. Pilotto and design parter Christopher De Vos pride themselves on being hard to pin down in terms of influences and references each season; and the allure of beautiful prints combined with fantastical drapery make the house’s designs winners every time. Van Der Ham, on the other hand, astounded the Fashion East crowds with his desirable take on deconstruction- literally combining multiple textures, eras and colour in collage dresses and skirts. Holly Fulton is perhaps most famous for being ‘Sam Cam’s’ jeweller of choice: the PM’s wife wore one of her signature graphic statement necklaces whilst out on the campaign trail. However more than the political polemic, Fulton shows a refreshing commitment to Art Deco styles, and an undeniably fun element is always present in her work.
We can’t wait to see what these guys come up with in time for fashion week in September- especially now that they’re got the full support of the industry behind them. Until then though, we’ll have to make do with browsing their Spring looks online.

Colour me beautiful
Richard Nicoll has been making waves on the London fashion season for a few seasons now, what with his supurb tailoring and bold colour choices. As a man who had his entire graduate collection bought up by Dolce and Gabbana, Nicoll was always destined to leave a mark. His debut collection in 2005 (after working alongside Jacobs at Louis Vuitton previously) showed a designer with a talent for neat cocktail dresses and covetable over-sized t-shirts. His look has evolved over time, and now we are often presented with more minimalist collections, taking on themes of futurism and romanticism in his own special way.
Everyone knows Central St Martins is a breeding ground for craftsmanship and creativity, and for Nicoll this has usually involved a daring take on seasonal colour schemes. For Autumn we can expected to dip into greys and inky blues, in a sultry secretary theme, but for now Nicoll seems to have trademarked colour blocking. Muted pastels create visions of purple and indigo, or orange and fuchsia in relaxed suits or body conscious dresses. Nicoll was apparently inspired by 19th century traditional Tahitian clothing for his summer collection, and wrapped and tied clothing and arm accessories accordingly. Oh yeah, and if you’re wondering why there’s so much fringing around, that was Nicoll too. And the cropped top trend? Nicoll engineered this in line with high-waisted skirts or trousers in his perfect colour spectrum.

Fresh off the block
Every season we hear about new colour trends: neon brights, pastels, digital patterns or tie dyes. Instead of wearing just one of this seasons hottest hues, try blocking them together. Colour blocks appeared on the Spring/Summer 2010 runway and now they can be integrated effortlessly into many different styles of dress.
For the sport-luxe look with a feminine twist, Jonathan Saunders used colour blocking in both chic body-con dresses and athletic shirts and tops. Pastels in green, pink and blue added a softness to the outfits without making anything appear choppy.
Richard Nicoll put a tribal twist on his colour blocking. Materials in his spring collection stood out in orange, lavender and pink. The key to this collection was to separate hues by each individual piece, meaning lots of layered vests and draped skirts. These pieces also featured fabric with shine and movement, adding the perfect touch to Nicoll’s collection.
Versace went glamorous with geometric brights this season, adding in prints and designs inspired by classic baroque art. Dresses hugged the body as always, and the mixing of intricate prints and vivid hues gave the collection a delightfully summery feel.

Blocking may be back, but keep this geometric look fresh by varying fabric, shape and texture. Shop all the latest colour trends at LynkU.

Romp around
We can’t help but have warm weather and summer festivities on the brain today. Whether you’re lounging in the park or on the beach, shopping at open-air markets or grooving at summer music festivals the romper is back for another sunny season. We saw this micro sized body suit all over the Spring/Summer 2010 runway, and we’re ready to integrate it into our spring wardrobes immediately.
These sweet one-piece options are so easy to wear. Like a sun-dress, you can just slip on a romper. Woman may be fearful to try out this look but it can actually flatter if worn the right way. Lacoste’s spring collection gave us an insight into sporty romper style. Pair a solid coloured like navy, white or red with a pair of simple courts and a few bright bangles and you will be ready to serve up a winning match—all in style of course.

Our favourite one-piece style would have to bohemian, these two go together like cheese and crackers—a delicious pairing of silhouette and print. Anna Sui integrated her boho style into longer, more fluid playsuits in this season’s collection. Romp around in an earthy number–shop white cotton, one shouldered cuts, tribal prints and add a soft brown leather belt.

Why not give the romper a feminine edge? Fendi’s spring collection kept with the sheer trend with a mid-sleeved body suit in luxurious cream silk. To make jumpers super-chic experiment with the neckline: go strapless, add ruffles and splash some sequins. These girlie uniforms can be soft for day or flashy for night and are in perfect keeping with the trends of this season.
