Runway Trend- Plaid-a-plenty
Styles come and styles go, some make it and some don’t, but when you see a particular item of clothing galloping down numerous catwalks- you know that trend is going to catch. So for Autumn 2010 we present to you… plaid. The granny chic print that has taken the fashion world by storm.
Seen on the A/W 2010 runways of Dior, Armani, Louis Vuitton, Missoni and Prada, plaid has certainly announced itself as a dominant style setter this season. Commonly known as tartan, it has a rather distinguishable criss-cross pattern using bands of colour to create a checked effect.
According to designers, plaid must be worn as either a full length skirt, kilt or structured blazer to pay homage to its Scottish heritage. If you’re anything like us then an image of a burly Scotsman blowing away on his bagpipes has just popped into your head. But fear not, as this season’s re-styled designs will mean you’ll look anything but a haggis eating Loch Ness monster.

Get the Look: Camel
According to Chloe and many other designers, the colour palette for A/W 2010 is not your typical boring brown. Oh no, this year it’s all about the desert. The camel may be a hissing, spitting bad tempered creature but that hasn’t stopped the fashion pack making it’s fur the shade of the season.
Dressing head to toe in this beige hue is by no means a fashion faux pas, just as long as you mix up the shades correctly. Sportmax offer the ultimate autumn outerwear must have with this rather sophisticated double breasted trench coat. Finished off in a dark tone it allows for lighter shades to be introduced into your outfit. Tailored trousers are the perfect way to nail the boyfriend look, so invest in a tapered pair this season from Topshop. Ankle boots are sticking around for another season (or two) and we’d just like to thank Kurt Geiger for this runway-worthy pair. Make a savvy investment with Alexander McQueen’s quintessential belt, whilst a pair of faux fur gloves from YSL are the perfect accessory to splash out on this season.

Fashionable film
For many, the film Clueless evokes memories of bubbly blonde Cher, the ditzy daddy’s girl whose love for fashion has forever been branded in our movie memories. Clueless holds the title as one of the most iconic fashionable films ever made, all thanks to that infamous Calvin Klein dress. With re-editions available online, we take a look back at some other top fashion icons in film.

It could possibly be a sin against style not to include Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Holly Golightly oozed New York chic, dressed in elegant evening attire and dripping in jewels. Creating the ultimate fashion concoction, stylist Hubert de Givenchy combined a perfectly tailored LBD, oversized sunglasses and wide brimmed hat to achieve Golightly’s signature flair.

Grease brought the world Sandy, in her ladylike swishy prom dresses and tightly buttoned cardigans. But, those aren’t the looks that gripped us, we’ll leave that to the leggings. After ditching her goodie-two-shoes attitude, Sandy put on a pair of wet look leggings and had men falling at her feet. The epitome of sex and rebellion, these scandalous leggings are still being given a new life today.
Setting every trend sensation of the 80s, Desperately Seeking Susan has it all. Donning rosary beads, oversized bow headbands, laced gloves, meshed tops and baggy boyfriend trousers, Madonna became the style icon of the decade. The runways of autumn/winter 09 seemed to use this film as their inspiration, recreating the best of the 1980s. This is one time-trip we’d like to keep reliving. -
Flare for style
The flare is back in a big way. Trousers and denim are shifting away from the skinny look that we have seen over the past few seasons and returning to wider, flowing shapes. After seeing the Autumn/Winter 2010 collections of Derek Lam, Chloe, Prada and Rochas, it was clear bell bottoms are back and looking better than ever. The new flare can still have a retro feel but instead of floppy denims and disco bright think hippy chic. Try these trousers in earth tones such has brown or cream paired with soft, flowing blouses. Add brocade textures for a vintage flair.
One thing is for sure, the flair is key in suiting for autumn. Whether you prefer dress slacks in pinstripes, solid colour or tweed, a high waist with ultra wide bottoms are fantastic for work or a night out on the town. Just wear with a soft blouse and confidence, of course.
A bit of femininity can go a long way. Try pretty pastels in orange, yellow or blue to add a sweet touch to any pair of slacks. Also try cropped options with a hem just above the ankle bone to elongate legs– just make sure the bottoms aren’t too short!
Don’t toss your skinny jeans and leggings aside just yet- they’ll be here for years, but wide leg trousers will update your look come autumn.

Wrapped in a cape
With the start of London Fashion Week comes overcast skies and chilling winds. If you are running from show to show, waiting in queue to catch a glimpse of newest collections or simply monitoring the presentations whist you are busy with your work day, it is essential to brave the elements in style.
The cape coat is practical to bundle up in during the cold winter months but it also fits well with this season’s tribal trend. The safari, or tribal look is a mesh of urban design, earth tones and traditional prints and the cape embodies all of these elements perfectly.
The recently popular cape has been reborn on the runways of Oscar de la Renta and Celine and spotted on celebrities like Natalie Portman and Blake Lively. The key to pulling off the cape coat is to coordinate your outfit with the outerwear itself. Try wearing tights and ankle boots with a longer cloak or skinny trousers and heels with a cropped cape. A pencil skirt will also flatter the flow of this style of jacket, adding to the layers it creates. Because of the cut and shape, avoid mismatched prints or bulky tops and trousers because if you’re not careful, a cape can look more like a costume than a chic parka.
We love especially love this style belted or embellished. Because the cut is, well, shapeless- it can fall gracefully or you can manipulate the shape yourself with ties and belts. Plaids, tans and blacks look great with a wide leather belt to synch material at the waist. It can also be decorative with large stones and sequins or stitched toggle ties. We especially love studding and bead work along the neck line or side panels. If your wardrobe consists of darks and neutrals why not add a pop of colour with a red cape? Any style of this cloaked coat is perfect for making a sleek, and warm, statement.

Taking the gold
You don’t have to engage in bob sledding, figure skating, ski jumping or ice hockey to take home a win this Olympic season. Whilst the temperature drops and the athletes prepare at the Vancouver Winter Olympics, you can embrace the warm winter fashions with these gold-medal worthy ideas.
The official sponsor of this years winter games is designer Ralph Lauren, and his Olympic inspired line combine classic style with the desire to stay warm. In this spirit we found some great winter styles that will keep you warm and make you feel like you are watching all the winter events as the happen.
This chilly season means cashmere and Ralph Lauren Black Label does it well in a soft cable knit ideal of this time of year. To keep that sweater safe from the elements why not try some warm puffy jackets? We love the Winter 1996 Jacket from Balenciaga. Known as a designer who does outerwear with style, this coat is perfect in its snow-like colouring and texture.
Silk scarves and floppy hats are pretty but we love these thick winter accessories because they keep us warm and in vogue. And keep in mind that Olympic accessories aren’t confined to mittens, we love the idea of flashing some gold medals to support your favourite teams. This Kenneth Jay Lane medallion necklace has a vintage feel so it alludes to the win but doesn’t scream you are winter sports crazed. You may even want to wear a subtle nail colour that evokes some team spirit; we love Essie brand because it keeps nails healthy whilst giving them a vibrant color.
The excitement may be buzzing around who will take home the most medals this season but you can be sure the integrate your own Olympic winning style during this year’s winter games.

Winter knits
Though today is a balmy 8 degrees, tomorrow is set to bring more flurries. Tired of wearing thin cotton blouses, stiff trousers, and silk dresses?– none of which ever keep the chill at bay. This season, try a sweater. Thanks to the detail-inclined designs of Autumn/Winter 09, we’re left with a vast array of knits that are just as smart as a blazer but softer to wear. And who doesn’t want to look chic and cozy during the morning commute?
Some our favourite knits above are designed to take you from day to night effortlessly. A figure-conscious sweater dress is just right for the office and beyond. All Saint’s Tanzer tie-dye number is our pick to wear at your desk or with drink in hand. Equally lovely, Day Birger et Mikkelsen’s nubby wool knit would look perfect with a pair of chocolate coloured tights and flat suede boots. Add a splash of colour into your winter wardrobe with John Smedley’s cherry wrap. Like your standard warp dress, just warmer.
Our vote for casual wear goes to Rebecca Taylor’s Fair Isle print cardigan, which incorporates a dose of heritage. Clements Ribeiro’s startling chain-embellished lush blue knit is simply divine. Pair with skinny black trousers, leather booties and a printed tee (to make it fresh) and you’re set. For evening, it has to be Balenciaga. Slightly peaked shoulders frame the silhouette, and we love the shirring and mesh panel at the waist. It’s on sale from £395 marked down to £200 so grab it fast!

Memo to Mimco
We’re in love. After several weeks travelling Down Under, where it was impossible not to notice the summery style of the southern hemisphere, we’ve decided to focus on one of our favourite Aussie exports sold here in (snowy) London town. Mimco already sets handbag lovers’ hearts aflutter, but be sure not too miss the line’s amazing accessories.
There’s truly something for everyone, from the girliest girl to those concerned with function and function only. Admittedly the tribal jewellery is catching our eye at the moment, but whilst across the globe we saw plenty of silver chains and spangly pearls to ignite our wish list. Post-holiday sales are always a plus, and House of Fraser, which stocks Mimco, has discounted earrings, necklaces, bags and bangles galore. Try as we might, we were unable to squeeze any hair accessories in this collage-du-jour, so check out the hard ribbon clips, ornate slides and ultra feminine headbands for some hair décor.

Baby, it’s cold outside
Try as we might, it is incredibly difficult to ignore the the drifts of snow piling up along the city streets. We’ve been collectively avoiding the mention of the s-word for the last week, until this morning whilst we waited with the usual rush-hour crowd. Outside. In the snow. Again. Before we could even enter the Tube station (determination was the only thing holding us there). The jig is up officially. We caved. The spring/summer 2010 preview is on-hold. It’s time to explore what we should have been wearing for the morning commute.
Like mumma always said, keep your head covered! Secure the warmth with a soft beret or a knitted beanie. The hat-ear muff debate may never be settled, but if you want to keep your hair intact, we suggest some snuggly muffs.
Whatever your feelings on winter wear, gloves are a non-negotiable. A dire necessity even. Leather looks super luxe, whilst fingerless mitts allow you to text away even on the coldest days.
Uggs. Ugh. Stow the heels away for now, but don’t fret just yet. Ugg and Love from Australia (is Australia cornering the market on snow shoes now?) are offering some pretty –and discounted– options to let you dress up your snow gear just a bit!
