Jessica Alba in Venice
Jessica Alba wearing Dolce & Gabbana at photocall for her latest film Machete is like a match made in sartorial heaven. For one, Dolce & Gabbana do dramatic bold blossoms like no other designers around, and Alba clearly has no problem with prints (remember the train of California cool Proenza scribbles she was sporting last winter?). The actress truly committed to this runway ready style that, is in fact, apt for a sultry appearance in Venice. And, oh! those shoes. You knew we were going to go there. We had to – this pair begs to be addressed. Strappy black buckles on a sturdy platform? Sounds like sweet style to our ears, and we simply adore the look of it paired with this floaty flroal skirt. Well done, Jess.

Natalie Portman at Venice Film Festival
There are two passions we cherish equally in this world, and while one is most obviously fashion, the other would be dance–in all its forms, which means Natalie Portman’s latest film Black Swan is a must-see for this FFL writer. Along with costume designer Amy Westcott, Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte designed all the outfits worn by the ballet corps in the film directed by Darren Arronofsky. It should come as no surprise than that Portman wore a glamorous scarlet gown designed by the Mulleavy sisters to the movie’s premiere at the Venice Film Festival. And yet, surprised we were. Rodarte is a line followed dearly each runway season, but very rarely are its cob-web knits, moody prints and sweeping tulle –that we cannot get enough of– found on the red carpet. And whilst Portman’s luxurious look departs from the Rodarte we know and love, its signature stlying is still apparent in the beaded bodice, wispy silk, and romantic layering.
Perhaps Portman will stick with Rodarte for Black Swan’s wide release premiere. We can only hope. But one thing is for sure, Natalie would be a graceful brand ambassador if we do say so ourselves.

Where has Katy Perry gone?
Where has the old Katy Perry, who we all know and love, gone? The cupcake bras, bright orange lipstick, candy coloured tutus and diamond encrusted leotards are nowhere to be seen in this recent get up. And we want to know why, fast!
Katy may have been attending a radio interview in Paris but that’s no excuse to put the cartoon style behind her. The knee length pencil skirt, long sleeved jumper and neutral colour scheme look more oh la la than California Gurl! Katy entertained us with the bright shimmery style we’ve come to know and love during a performance on the Today Show, reaffirming our belief that once you manifest an image it is therefore your duty to uphold it. So please Katy don’t turn into a cardigan wearing plain jane, go back to Candy Land and let us once again live in your fantasy of unpredictable fashion.

Leighton Meester on GG set
Leighton Meester and Blake Lively get a lot of coverage on the pages of FFL, but is there a better lunch than pouring through fun, flirty and fashion-forward outfits? We think not. Chalk it up to a successful costume designer, because the Gossip Girl set is rife with runway designs. And this beige beauty is a personal favourite. Earlier in the summer you may remember we raved about Victoria Beckham’s press day– the clothing was just too good not give credit where credit is deserved. Beckham is certainly already a hit with the celebrity set, from Lively to Ella Macpherson starlets just eat up her figure-flattering silhouettes. And Miss Meester here demonstrates how to wear the ever-present flesh colour without looking washed out. Paired with peep-toe pumos (while filming), an embellished clutch and a wide gold cuff, Meester looks youthful yet sleek in this shimmery drape top dress.

January Jones at the 2010 Emmy Awards
It wasn’t hard to select the most memorable look from the 62nd Emmy Awards, because January Jones stole the show in Atelier Versace. Whilst there were many fashion-forward options on hand—Emily Blunt in Dior, Anna Paquin in Alexander McQueen, Chloe Sevigny in Lanvin—the Mad Men actress turned heads in a strapless dress cut short in the front with a long train behind, crafted solely out of cobalt blue silk petals from Versace’s Spring 2010 collection. We’re still up in the air regarding the black Miu Miu pumps, but we appreciate Jones’ risk-taking style. It’s always nice to see a celeb in a flattering cut and a bold hue. Bravo!

Calvin Klein Beauty
We have a weekend thought to leave you with. As the face of Calvin Klein Beauty, launched this week, Diane Kruger has spent plenty of time gushing about Klein, it’s beauty secrets, and of course Head designer Francisco Costa. And we’ve seen her in some show stopper outfits from the brand- how could anyone forget that simple column gown from the Costume Institute Gala, for example? That, for us, redefined modern elegance on the red carpet!
In keeping with Kruger’s appeal then, Klein have kept the campaign itself paired back, elegant and demure in stark white lighting and similarly refined clothing.
Butttttt…
We thought Kruger’s heart only belonged to Chanel? As well as the whole ‘Karl Lagerfeld’s my mentor’ thing (she genuinely seems to find this normal), Kruger has spent years slipping in and out of Chanel couture and Ready-to-Wear, doing a similar fresh and classic look which Klein appear to have pinched a bit.
So who, apart from Pacey, is your real love Diane? And what do you think- Diane as Chanel lady, or Klein girl? Answers on a postcard please.

Jessica Alba at Machete premiere
Jessica Alba attended the film premiere of her latest film Machete directed by Robert Rodriguez, looking absolutely fantastic in a zigzag print gold and black sequin mini dress. Alba was rocking California cool up top with loose, wavy hair and shimmery chic below with exaggerated shoulders and a tight fit. The sexy heeled sandals have taken most of our attention to be honest, and have almost wiped out the image of Alba’s co-star Lindsay Lohan dressed in a nun’s habit wielding a gun in a promo shot for the film. Though Lohan, who famously was just released from rehab, was not at the premiere in Los Angeles (most likely a good sign, we think). We have no interest in seeing this sure to be grusome piece of cinema, but we will be keeing an eye on Alba’s red carpet journey.

Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream
Katy Perry is hot on the global trail promoting her new album Teenage Dream, and her latest stop off was in the Big Apple where she appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman. Usually, we view the California Curls singer a bit skeptically, sure she has her own style, but it tends to be a little too Minnie Mouse for our liking (remember the day glow dress she wore to the Met Gala?). However, Katy was spotted leaving dinner with fiance Russell Brand in tow looking very sweet in a shimmery cream bustier dress, tied at the waist with a pretty bow. As is normally the case, the neckline was low, but flattering and come to think of it we like the exposed jewel bra and peep toe heels…even the cherry red lips are kind of cute on this grey day. It wouldn’t be Katy Perry without a bit of fifties pin-up to it, now would it, but if we have to take that we like it understated and dare we say, chic!

Moschino and Peroni team up in Senza Tempo
Moschino and its sister line Cheap And Chic are like naughty school girls you know you shouldn’t encourage, but you can’t help but cheer on excitedly. Playful, vibrant, full of tricks and tongue-in-cheekiness, Moschino’s Rossella Jardini reminds us that fashion doesn’t have to be so serious. However, the line’s latest endeavour, a short film collaborating with Peroni Nastro Azzuro, proves that the designer can sink her teeth into a dramatic project with elegance and grace. Senza Tempo (or Timeless—though those silky Italian syllables sound so much nicer…) was directed by Gabriele Muccino, he of Seven Pounds and The Pursuit of Happyness fame, and will run in UK cinemas from 3 September. Moschino was a natural choice for the 1960s era romance, according to costume designer Angelica Russo, who selected the iconic fashion label for Jardini’s uncanny ability to reinvent classic construction with a twist.
“It was a very important experience for me because Rossella and therefore Moschino’s fashion allowed me to interpret my vision in which cinema and fashion can still make people dream. I see a great creative synergy with these fields, in both of which Italy has a tradition of excellence,” Russo said of the collaboration.
Even if an icy cold brew isn’t your tipple of choice, you need only to look at the adverts to know that Peroni is a seriously stylised brand dressed with a sinuous blue ribbon framing its label. Jardini wove this satin bow around the female lead’s champagne coloured bustier dress, which looks as relevant in today’s fashion forecast as it did five decades ago. The designer created all of the costumes worn in the film, setting the stage for romance in tailored jackets, smart hats, bold prints and several undeniably charming slim fit suits worn by the male leads. It sounds like a perfect formula: fashion and romance set against the backdrop of cobbled piazzas and a setting sun over the Eternal City. All that’s left is a ticket to Italy, fast.

Drew Barrymore at LA premiere
Drew Barrymore attended the Los Angeles premiere of her latest film Going the Distance looking every bit as stunning as we had hoped. Despite her disappointing showing on this side of the pond earlier this week, Barrymore wore a short and super casual McQ by Alexander McQueen dress, Drew upped the style quotient for the Sunshine State in a strapless gold jacquard dress and grey suede courts. Rescuing the one successful venture from London, a studded Balmain belt, the actress put the accessory to good use, spicing up her ruched gown (this is Drew, after all).
As for the are they-aren’t they rumours surrounding Barrymore and her co-star (and former boyfriend) Justin Long, well your guess is as good as ours, we’re just glad to see a boho girl go glam–in her own way.
