Academy Award winning style 2010
The 82nd annual Academy Awards dazzled Hollywood Sunday night, as screen sirens turned up the heat on the red carpet. Runway-ready looks reigned in a season that was dominated by couture ruffles. The evening was kicked off with familiar shouts of ‘Who are you wearing?,’ and of course, we were all ears. Here are a few of our favourite Oscar looks. Notable mention goes to Diane Kruger (always a favourite) who looked lovely in a tiered Chanel dress, Rachel McAdams who glowed in a pretty pastel gown by Elie Saab, and Miley Cyrus in Jenny Packham. Yes, we deliberated about even typing that last name, but the young singer/actress stepped up her style by toning down her dress selection (remember last year’s controversial overly embellished number?!). Packham’s champagne-coloured frock fitted Miley perfectly– truly a step in the right direction.
Cameron Diaz looked gorgoeus in Oscar de la Renta (right) during the show and after at the Vanity Fair party (left). We love how both looks featured metallic shimmer– and bold red lips didn’t hurt either.
Zoe Saldana was stunning in a Givenchy couture confection. The Avatar actress stole the show in a sparkly bodice atop waves of violet ruffles.
British beauty Carey Mulligan held her in a LBD by Prada. Mulligan was effortlessly chic as usual in this incredibly embellished frock.
Sandra Bullock, we have to hand it to her. Not generally known for her fashion sense, Bullock looked every bit the Academy Award-winning actress that she now is (thanks to The Blind Side) in a gilded Marchesa gown. Bravo! -
What Cheryl wore next
Surprisingly, we’re not going to speculate on the state of Cheryl Cole’s marriage or the gold cocktail ring in place of her extraordinary diamond ring from Ashley Cole in this shot. No, we’ll leave that to the gossip sites, we’re focusing on Cheryl’s plane style. The girl landed at LAX looking lovely as usual, perfectly curled hair, big aviators, skinny jeans and a printed jumper(not to mention that bag). Cole’s understated classic style got us thinking about our favourite zip-up options for every day use.
With so many options on LynkU, we decided to do the shopping for you (it was our pleasure), to select the best fitted jumpers for daily wear. Buttoned-up, zipped, or cropped, these knits are effortless and cosy, and come in all price points. From Topshop to Matches, we’re focusing on a snug fit and a bold or quirky pattern. Miss Selfridges speckled hearts print is super sweet, or take a walk on the wild side with D&G’s animal print option. Whatever your preference, stay warm in style until spring sunshine strikes.

Valentine’s Day premiere
Excuse us for inundating you with celebrity style on today’s menu, but this Valentine’s Day film premiere had too many gems to pass up. The stunning Jessica Alba looks just as happy to be outfitted in spring Proenza Schouler as we are to see her in it. This is truly a case of a star getting it right. Alba’s 1920s bob and California cool attitude match Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough’s design aesthetic flawlessly. We adore how the swirls of emerald and sapphire seem to float off Alba’s body, styled with chunky silver bangles. Down to the towering heels she balanced on, Alba’s premiere-perfect look stood out from the other floor-length gowns.
Behold Jennifer Garner. This isn’t safe. This is seductive, sexy, tight, short and leather. And we love it. This is Valentino, as designed by Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli. This is a duo that’s revitalising an established house for a younger audience. This is what we like to see. Garner looks fantastic–the nude-coloured dress is bound in black leather and lace that traces the actress’ silhouette from bust to knee. Long, loose flowing curls, simple black heels and minimal accessories–except perhaps some rose red nails– are all that’s necessary to accompany the look.
Alba and Garner have delivered two irresistible looks, certain to ensure an unforgettable holiday weekend.

Jessica Biel pretty in pink
The Los Angeles premiere of Valentine’s Day was a star-studded event to say the least. Julia Roberts, Jessica Biel, Jennifer Garner, Jessica Alba (more on the last two to follow), and that’s just a few of the girls in attendance. However, it was Jessica Biel who stood out as the fashion epitome of Valentine’s Day. Dressed in a one-shoulder Oscar de la Renta gown, Biel glowed with confidence. With waves of chiffon rippling down to the ground, simple upswept hair and red lips, the actress exuded romance on the red carpet. For our part, we’ve selected the most delicate–and delicious–silk confections we could find on LynkU in this month’s hottest hues: ruby red and sugary pink. First you’ll need a good foundation. We suggest Jean Yu’s satin and silk bra, fusing fuchsia and red, to start the night off right. A chiffon blouse is either sexy (think sheer red over black) or sweet (layered or buttoned up to the neck and tied with a bow), whilst a lacy camisole might be best saved for after dinner. Acne’s loose-fitting shorts are only for those brave enough to bare some leg on the wintry night. We suggest pairing with a slinky black tank, towering heels and tonnes of jewels for some sparkle. In the end, it’s all down to the accessories, especially if that’s the only way you’ll be injecting holiday flavour. A red silk scarf or plisse magenta slingbacks will do the trick. Remember a little touch of colour goes a long way, and a rosy hue ups the romance factor.

Sarah Jessica in Christian Dior
A Hollywood celeb was bound to wear this beauty from Christian Dior’s spring 2010 show. It was one of those impossible-to-forget dresses epitomising the lacy loveliness we’ve come to recognise as one of this season’s hottest looks–intricately embroidered black chiffon seductively bound over a bold colour–in this case fuchsia. Leave it to Mrs. Sex and the City herself to personalise Galliano’s gorgeous mini baby-doll dress with beaded necklaces and a stack of jewels on her wrist. Though Sarah Jessica Parker wasn’t our first bet to rock this look, we can’t get enough of her Downtown vibe. And let’s not forget the fashion. The black shirring at the bust and boudoir-inspired motif are perfect for spring…and our closet.
We started scouring. Black lace, any lace, pink and black mix. You name it…we found it on LynkU. Whilst Dior’s version is yet to be unleashed on the racks, this v-neck Nanette Lepore option was the closest–and most price effective–alternative we could find. Wear with peep-toe patent heels and a pair of drop earrings. Happy Shopping!

Cat Deeley jumps on the trend
The lovely and au naturale (as we’ve learned) Cat Deeley was spotted at the Connaught Hotel in London last night sporting a stylish jumpsuit. It’s clear that these one-piece suits are not going anywhere for spring, but Deeley’s certainly increased the glam factor. The So You Think You Can Dance presenter looked stunning as she attended the Damiani jewellery party in a silky royal blue playsuit cinched at the waist. Here in the office we are literally jumping for joy –please excuse the pun– that there’s a fashionable alternative to a gown especially in the cold winter months.
Below are our top picks for the best dressed-up jumpsuits for a night out. The key to this look a is a cool cut, interesting detail and a suggestive drape. Pair with killer courts, a cute clutch and an extra long necklace. Shop the styles below on LynkU.

Kaufmanfranco and the stars
Like many country singers, Taylor Swift seems drawn to all things sparkly. It’s practically the uniform of her music genre. However, Swift makes shimmer look light and fresh…maybe it has something to do with her simply sweet demeanour? Or perhaps, it’s the fact she keeps it tame. We’ve been on team Taylor since the whole Kanye debacle, and definitely took note of her appearance at this year’s Grammys.
Swift twinkled in a sapphire backless gown by Kaufmanfranco. Cutting a seductive silhouette, Swift shined like stars in the night sky in this off-the-shoulder number that criss-crossed along the back of her shoulder blades. Naturally, we had to take a look at the designer, or in this case— designers Ken Kaufman and Isaac Franco. After designing for Valentino and Ungaro together, Kaufman and Franco launched their line in 2004. The intensely creative duo has already racked up quite a celebrity following including Beyonce, Megan Fox and Whitney Houston, whilst Swift and Eva Longoria appear to be ‘regulars.’
Glowing embellishments are the key ingredients of this collection, so it’s no wonder the stars have come calling. Kaufman and Franco’s range is edgy yet luxurious—it’s complexity is in the detail. Get in line ladies, because this spring Browns will be stocking Kaufmanfranco exclusively in London, guaranteeing the nights are sure to shine a lot brighter.

A Single Man premiere
Last night London town heralded the directorial debut of designer Tom Ford. One small step for man, one giant step for fashion! The former-Gucci designer is racking up the accolades for A Single Man, starring Colin Firth as a gay English professor who loses his partner. Nominated for Golden Globes, BAFTAs, and a SAG award, Mr. Ford has done well for his first time in the ring.
Though we cannot wait to see the film, we’re a tad more interested in Firth’s stylish significant other Livia and her Green Carpet challenge. Livia opted for a teal-coloured cocktail gown by Sara Shepherd, an alum of St. Martin’s, who excels in eco-chic. According to Livia, the designer uses luxury fabric that is surplus or last season from design houses. Sounds all right to us. We love an environmentally-friendly challenge, and will continue to watch Livia’s pursuit.

Gaga for Armani Privé
Ever the eccentric, Lady Gaga donned a trio of designs by Armani Privé at the 2010 Grammy Awards, though this space-age creation was the best of the lot. For her turn as the stylised Glenda, the Good Witch, Gaga came equipped with a star burst magic wand and crystallised slippers. With embellished mesh sleeves and orbits of shimmer surrounding the extensively boned dress, the Lady sparkled like a star hurdling through space.
From head to toe, Gaga made a statement. But we wouldn’t expect anything less from the Bad Romance singer, now would we? The fact that she managed to strut her way down the red carpet is especially baffling. Perhaps her super-spoked accessory helped to balance the weight? Love her or loathe her, Gaga’s fashion advances are certainly in an orbit of their own.

Grammy style goes nude
Usually Grammy Awards fashion conjures up images of electric-coloured satin, cut-outs that leave more exposed and less to the imagination, plunging necklines, loud prints and louder artists, and of course an ample amount of feathers– a la Bjork. And the question of the evening is not who, but what are you wearing. However throughout the past decade, the fashion-faithful starlets of the Noughties have done their best to tip the ratio of glamour to rock ‘n’ roll. This year’s red carpet shows the scale has definitely been altered in favour of the catwalk with everyone from Beyonce to Keri Hilson wearing spring’s hottest colour: nude.
Miss Knowles (or perhaps, Mrs. Carter) will find a figure-hugging frock if there is one to be found, and Stephane Rolland’s Winter Couture gown suited her hourglass figure perfectly (we’re surprised she beat Cheryl Cole to this one). From the embroidery tracing all around the pearl-coloured mermaid silhouette to the deep-V zip, Beyonce looked luxurious yet seductive—an art the singer has mastered.
Rihanna, pop princess slash queen of runway-ready style, opted for this frothy number from Elie Saab’s Winter Couture collection. Initially we were surprised by the singer’s sophisticated choice–we were expecting something a little more shocking (this role has been filled by Gaga of late)– though she looks beautiful. Generally the choice of Academy Award-nominated actresses, Elie Saab has cornered the market on red carpet style. His designs epitomise the glorious gowns little girls only dream of wearing, and this pale ivory dress is no different. Rihanna naturally carries the look flawlessly, with delicate chiffon petals blooming up to her neck and crystal embellishment covering the bodice. The pronounced shoulders and draped waist add a futuristic look to the gown, and the thigh-grazing slit is simply stunning.
It’s official the nude palette is off and running.
