Dark Romance
Written by Vanessa Zaree

Lace has always been a tricky matter. Don’t get us wrong – we love the romance of it all, the slight Gothic feel, the fine line between delicacy and sensuality. But if we’re not careful, the peekaboo effect might not go as planned.
Be prepared though – lace is big this season. It was the star of the show at Dolce & Gabbana’s Spring 2010 collection. The design duo returned to their Italian heritage – plenty of black, corsets and lace. It was a beautiful collection, if not a little risqué, and completely in line with the underwear as outwear philosophy of late. Still, no reason why we can’t take inspiration from the masters of Italian sexiness.
Lace is easier to pull off than one might suspect, it’s just a matter of balance. For a nightly event, Stella McCartney’s mini lace dress is sweet with a twinge of darkness, and the lace detail stands out without being overpowering. A charming long sleeved dress By Malene Birger leaves all to the imagination as it only reveals the arms and a tasteful amount of cleavage. Wal G’s short sleeved black dress is perfect for the dance floor – add a shocking red accessory (some heels, a clutch or some kissable red lips) for a super glam effect.
Lace can make it to the office as well, just stick on a black camisole under New Look’s lace top. We love this option by Karen Millen – the laced shoulder detail is elegant and romantic. For a bit of Parisian chic, Topshop’s Breton top with a little lace injection is just the answer. We’ve fallen for this 3.1 Phillip Lim skirt – add a black top to get a super-chic work look.
If any of you think that lace is best kept in the boudoir, why not try it on accessories? These footless tights by Topshop are perfect for layering under mini dresses, while these New Look heels pay a subtle tribute to this very sexy frabic. Lacy, we say, not racy.
